Lee Yoon Jung expresses stories and heartfelt wishes through the symbolic object of paper airplanes. Layering gouache multiple times to create depth through color overlays and utilizing dotted surfaces for simplified expressions, she builds imaginary spaces.
The series "Hearts Take Flight" involves putting untold stories and earnest wishes into paper airplanes and letting them soar. Originating from deeply personal experiences in daily life, these works aim to offer viewers a small respite and comfort by inviting them to share their own stories through paper airplanes. The artist prepares these pieces with the hope that all desired outcomes will be fulfilled.
Lee's work stems from emotional changes experienced in everyday life. Particularly, projects involving paper airplanes originated from the longing and memories due to the absence of family. The emotion of 'nostalgia' became condensed into the object of 'paper airplane' and found its symbolism in the artworks.
Initially directed towards fixed subjects within virtual spaces, the content sent through paper airplanes gradually expanded to encompass oneself or vague subjects.
Concurrently, there is a continuous attempt to break free from constraints of space and time. The canvas serves as a boundary, where the space outside signifies the present and the inside represents an imaginary realm. In essence, the viewer and the artwork together showcase the present, past, future, the afterlife, or a virtual space.
The paper airplane serves as a mediator, allowing navigation through these various spaces within the artwork. The key interests in Lee's current work include communication between the past and present, visualization of the future, aspirations for transcendental existence, and harmonizing Eastern and Western color palettes as a means of expression.
