Praween
Praween Piangchompu is a printmaking artist distinguished by a unique fusion of technical skill and stylistic approach. His practice centers around a specialized method involving softer wood blocks and sandpaper, where he carefully sands a single wood matrix several times to create layered color impressions. Each successive layer enriches the image’s surface with nuanced tonalities. Because he sands gently into the wood, his resulting hues are faint and dreamlike, avoiding any overt or rigid outlines. Instead, he suggests form through adjacent values or colors. Although working with one matrix might appear more straightforward than using multiple blocks, it actually demands a high level of accuracy—once a layer is printed, there is no way to fix errors from previous stages.
